Krista Williamson began working on the idea behind Cheeky Monkey when she was on maternity leave in 2003. Krista loved sewing, business and her family and was looking for a way to combine all three of these things. A life-long entrepreneur, Krista started her first business selling out of a catalogue in grade four. As a busy Financial Planner and a mother of 3, Krista was looking for a way to add some much needed flexibility and passion into her work. After reading an article in the Canadian Living Magazine about another Mom who started her own business from her home sewing, Krista decided to try her hand at making baby linens and other accessories. Her husband Rob helped her develop patterns for her projects and the creativity began!
The name Cheeky Monkey came from a nick-name she called her oldest son when he was a toddler. Precocious, full of life and sensitive (with a little bit of naughty) best describes that toddler stage of children. The name was a perfect fit and Cheeky Monkey® was born! Her online business began from a small five page website that Rob learned how to develop from a friend. This was before online shopping was widely available in Canada and Krista very quickly took over this process and began an expansion that would result in the Cheeky Monkey of today. In the early days of the business, Cheeky Monkey participated in craft fairs, school sales, fundraisers and other local ways of selling in the community. The website began to grow organically and once an article in Chatelaine was published, Cheeky Monkey exploded. Online chat sites, community boards and blogs spread the word from coast to coast and Cheeky Monkey expanded across Canada and the US.
It wasn’t long before Krista saw the potential in what she was doing. While her education and background in marketing and business has aided in her success, it was her commitment to her family and her passion for natural parenting that led to the vision of Cheeky Monkey. Very quickly Krista learned about the world of specialty retail. She attended shows, explored the internet and read everything she could get her hands on. Breastfeeding, natural products, early learning and addressing the needs of the mother were all very important to Krista.
New products that made life a little easier for Mom were quickly added to the line-up and in 2006 the first Cheeky Monkey store was opened in London, Ontario. Throughout the years all three of Krista’s children and her husband Rob have participated in the business. Upon graduation from a post-secondary marketing program her middle child Becky joined the business full time. Both Becky and Krista can usually be found talking about, thinking about, writing about and working on Cheeky Monkey.
